Cooperative Management By Objectives (CMBO)

CMBO© is the basis of a study started sometimes in 1983 as my contribution to the not-so-abundant supply of thoughts on cooperatives.

The internationalization of cooperation necessarily takes its practice in Nigeria beyond the ‘hands-to-mouth’ level on which it had existed for centuries. The tremendous breakthrough in communication enforces this globalization and therefore a need for the re-engineering of cooperative management....... hence CMBO...

.....when in 1983 I had suggested cooperative management as part of the title for my first book in this field, editors at Evans Publishers, Ibadan and their consultants had argued and tried to convince me that it is a non existent term or area of management.   I eventually withdrew the manuscript from Evans for review after over ten years of contemplation.

With time, I had been able to convince the “Joneses” that not only do we need to study cooperative management as a special area of interest but also that we can efficiently run these societies with cooperative management by objectives.

CMBO is my humble contribution to growth of thoughts on management, especially the management of self-help non profit oriented associations.  It is indeed the practical application of scientific management to the administration of cooperative business enterprises.

The first major effort at popularizing CMBO was undertaken at  a public lecture/delivered at the instance of the Lagos State Cooperative Federation Ltd (LASCOFED) at the Institute of International Relations, Victoria Island, Lagos in 1998.  Since then I had delivered an average of 100 lectures per year on the it and other related issues.

CMBO was further popularized through programmes like computer-Aided Accounting of Management for cooperative Societies (CAAM), House Ownership methodology & Estate Management Strategies for cooperative Societies (HOMES), Total Quality Cooperation (TQC) and a host of others.

My efforts at spreading this gospel had seen me involved in programmes sponsorship, scholarships, books donations and the establishment of the Executive Training Institute and Cybercollege on Iju Hills, Lagos.
